Open Source Computer Science Degree https://community.infosecinstitute.com/discussion/134764/open-source-computer-science-degree Tue, 29 Jan 2019 16:04:40 +0000 Educational Resources NEODREAM 134764@/discussions
Thought I'd share this here...essentially a YouTuber I follow put together materials from various open sources to create somewhat of a Computer Science degree plan and posted it on his github:

https://github.com/ForrestKnight/open-source-cs
https://github.com/ossu/computer-science (another option that seems to have slightly more advanced topics)

The layout and structure seem to be put together quite well although I haven't looked into the actual material yet.

Here's the video if anyone wants to watch and hear his explanations on why he chose specific courses: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyOvFSP_IpQ

Part of my role at InfoSec Institute includes contributing to our webinar series. I recently helped organize two webinars that I think you might enjoy. Both recordings are ungated (no forms!):
  • Top 20 Security Controls for a More Secure Infrastructure. Tony Sager from CIS talks best practices for securing your IT systems:

  • The Business Impact of Cyber Risk. A lawyer, cyber insurance expert and PR pro talk cyber risk:

I hope you find these helpful/interesting. We do provide certificates of completion to help with your CPE/CPU submissions if you need them. ]]>

did anyone here ever use the practice labs that ITpro.tv provides that's supplied by another IT training company called PRACTICE-LABS, based in the UK?

what's your comment if you have used them before? are the labs worth the price?

Reason i ask is because a lot of people here talk about ''TestOut'', ''CBT Nuggets'' etc

please advise]]>

Training Suggestions for a Tight Budget https://community.infosecinstitute.com/discussion/134350/training-suggestions-for-a-tight-budget Thu, 06 Dec 2018 15:02:47 +0000 Educational Resources Russ5813 134350@/discussions Hello everyone. I recently just finished my probationary period as a service desk specialist and my supervisor informed me that I have $800 to spend on training between now and the end of our fiscal year (June). Most OLL courses I've looked at start around $1800 and go up from there. I checked for any semi-local tech conferences/seminars that may be coming up but there doesn't seem to be much going on until later in the summer. I don't intend to leave any unspent money on the table, and as long as I can justify the expense (i.e. relate it to my duties, which I do a little of everything--security, network, desktop support, etc...), my supervisor will support it.

So, I'm hoping the TE community can offer some ideas for training to get the most bang for my buck. So far I've considered buying books or possibly a 1 year sub to CBT nuggets (although this slightly exceeds the $800 limit), but I'm curious what sort of training others have had with a limited budget. What say you?
